Meridian Charter Township

Meridian Township may not be the largest community in mid-Michigan, but that has not stopped them from keeping tons of recyclables out of the landfill. This community has two regional recycling events each year, one of which made it into the Guinness Book of World Records (for electronics). Success in recycling is largely due to an active Green Team and a concerned citizenry. At these events, they take heavy metals, electronics, medicines, household hazardous waste, clothing, books, bikes, and more.

A big priority for the Green Team is expanding recycling opportunities for apartment dwellers, where convenient recycling is almost non-existent.  A survey has recently been developed to gather information about the barriers and opportunities in multi-family housing. The Green Team also hopes to expand curbside recycling and support waste reduction in local schools and businesses.

The Meridian Green Team is just one citizen group helping to keep the community “green.” Dozens of groups including commissions, students, clubs, neighborhoods, businesses, churches, municipal departments, and other organizations help sustain and improve Meridian’s quality of life. Some others include an Environmental Commission works on wetland issues, a Land Preservation Board has helped purchase and protect over 900 acres of land, a pathway millage was passed in 1974 resulting in over 20 miles of trails and 76 miles of pedestrian/bicycle pathways, a Master Plan, updated in 2017, includes a long-term vision for preserving open space, parks, natural areas, residential neighborhoods, and efficient and sustainable growth.

The Meridian Green Team invites help from other communities and individuals interested in expanding recycling options. The Team is also looking forward to partnering with the Michigan Recycling Coalition on Recycle, MI initiatives and other greening initiatives in our beautiful state.
