The City of East Lansing was one of the first municipalities in the state to offer recycling services to its residents. Since its implementation, the City's program has steadily grown to provide convenient programs for yard waste, holiday waste, hard to recycle items, and more. Waste collection programs are administered by the City's Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.

The Department has its own fleet of collection vehicles and staff to perform curbside pickup of recycling, trash, and yard waste. It also operates a 24/7 recycling drop off center at the Public Works facility. Yard waste is collected curbside throughout the spring to fall season. When fall leaf drop starts, the City provides several weeks of bulk leaf collection where residents can simply rake their leaves to the curb for pickup.

To promote recycling during the holiday season, the City provides extra curbside recycling days for residents in December and January. In addition, they collect live-cut Christmas trees curbside during a two-week period after the holidays. The trees are chipped and used as mulch around city trees and on pathways.

For the past several years, East Lansing has been partnering with Lansing to attract a new facility to process recyclables in the region. That effort came to fruition earlier this year when their public-private partnership with Emterra resulted in the opening of the new Emterra Material Recovery Facility in Lansing. Now, recyclables collected in both of these cities are processed locally by Emterra before being shipped to manufacturers to use as raw materials in the production of new products.
