Emmet County

Emmet County Recycling, established in 1990, is dedicated to waste diversion and innovative material management that is both cost-effective and convenient. Their comprehensive recycling efforts include operating a transfer station, 12 recycling drop sites, a materials recovery facility (MRF), a recycling drop-off center, curbside and commercial recycling collections, zero waste event recycling, a compost facility, household hazardous waste events, and food scrap collection.

Emmet County Recycling has implemented new initiatives to enhance material reuse, reduction, recycling, and composting. They are working on shingle recycling and improving their compost facility with the goal of reducing food waste and improper disposal of organics. They started composting with 20 businesses four years ago and expanded to include a residential organics collection at drop-off locations in 2017. Their emphasis on convenience and education has driven participation levels, especially with increased outreach through social media platforms. Looking towards the future, Emmet aims to continue to build upon their work with organics as well as expand further into construction and demolition debris recycling.

The most important aspect of Emmet County Recycling's programming is the trust they have gained from the community. Their well-respected program has garnered participation and support from residents and businesses alike. They educate residents on the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) and proper disposal methods. Additionally, 95% of the materials recycled in Emmet County supply Michigan businesses, showcasing their dedication to creating local, circular recycling systems.

Looking towards the future, Emmet County aims to further reduce food waste through

education, outreach at events, and expanding commercial and residential organics collection. They plan to improve their dual stream MRF and increase participation at drop-off sites. Emmet County is committed to growing recycling in Michigan and encourages everyone in their area to participate and contribute to the cause. We are proud to recognize Emmet County  Recycling as a Recycle, MI partner.
