SOCCRA
Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA) provides waste management, recycling, and yard waste collection services for 12 communities in Southeast Oakland County–including Berkley, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, and Troy. With a service area over 75 square miles, SOCRRA serves nearly 300,000 households and hundreds of local businesses.
SOCRRA is a municipal authority that was originally formed in the 1950s and manages a full-service single-stream materials recovery facility (MRF), a transfer station, and compost site. It offers curbside collection and drop-off services for trash and recycling, and manages a drop-off recycling and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) center. Additionally, SOCRRA offers member residents free self-serve compost through its compost site in Rochester Hills, Michigan, which is managed by Spurt Industries (Spurt), a SOCRRA partner since March 2025. Through this unique partnership, SOCRRA residents can obtain nutrient-rich compost made from 100% organic local material that enhances soil health and promotes a more sustainable environment.
Out of all the commonly recycled materials, SOCRRA handles paper products the most. Cardboard is an especially popular recycled material. SOCRRA partners with its member communities to develop on-site drop-off sites to make recycling cardboard accessible and easy for residents. SOCRRA consolidates the material collected at these sites, creating a “hub and spoke” system for cardboard collections within the region.
As a regional leader, SOCRRA prioritizes outreach and education efforts to help build trust and understanding with residents, business owners, and other key stakeholders in its member communities. Through community engagement, SOCRRA can help individuals understand proper disposal practices and reduce contamination rates within its curbside recycling program. The SOCRRA team is committed to identifying challenges, pooling resources, and developing anti-contamination tools that work for the unique needs and cultures of each member community. Although Southeast Oakland County is incredibly diverse, all member communities are united by the same goal–to reduce waste within their neighborhoods and to support SOCRRA’s recycling and composting efforts.
