HDR
New legislative trends and sustainable practices are constantly changing the way we use everyday materials. Businesses are finding value in repurposed metals, plastics, and fibers once thought of as waste. Amid this shift, communities and businesses turn to experts like HDR, a global consulting firm with over 180 Michigan-based employees. HDR specializes in engineering, environmental, and construction solutions. Each of these sectors encounters waste — from construction debris to organic scraps and household recyclables. HDR’s technical experts help clients develop and execute plans that make sustainable materials management possible.
In 2018, Michigan passed amendments to the state’s solid waste laws (Part 115), which set goals for providing recycling access in communities across the state. Many communities didn’t know where to start, asking questions like: What’s the best way to invest in recycling? How do we ensure that residents and businesses participate? What infrastructure will we need to make this possible? HDR is working with county leaders to identify materials management opportunities that comply with new laws and work toward a more holistic approach to handling waste. For example, informed by past national successes, HDR is collaborating with St. Clair County’s leadership to design a public outreach and education campaign aimed at boosting recycling rates and encouraging participation in sustainable materials management.
Many of HDR’s 200+ offices have designated “sustainability stewards” who work to reduce waste and encourage recycling and composting within their offices. HDR is proud to practice what it preaches as they partner with clients to implement sustainable materials management for both the public and private sectors. We are proud to have HDR as a Recycle, MI partner!
